“I worry that a fraction of this fandom is completely adverse to character development. It ranges from people letting the first impression forever dictate how they see a character, to completely refusing to acknowledge any development. Mikado has developed in spades. Celty, Izaya, Shizuo, Anri. Even Saki and Vorona develop and show their good sides. Because no one is completely polar. Static characters can be great, but part of what makes DRRR!! so interesting is that the characters keep changing.”

I both agree with this and disagree.
It is FANfiction for a reason. Because it’s the fan just writing what they think or feel based off of an idea in their head. We, as fans AND individuals have our own headcanons. This is true. And yes, it’s true that NOBODY in Durarara!! is a static character (except maybe Simon… loljk). Every character is complex and constantly surprising us with something new. That’s the beautiful thing about it.
That said, a lot of fics are based off of a certain chunk of time, or they’re oneshots which do not require the same dynamics. When you think about it, EVERY fan fiction - not just Durarara!! fics - is an Alternate Universe story. Many of the events which take place in our own stories have little to nothing to do with the main, REAL story itself. We may mention canon events but for the most part, everything is what we think would happen n the event of such and such.
All we have is what Narita has given us. Often times, we do NOT know how a character would react given their current situation. We do not know what kind of relationship Shizuo and Izaya would have if their hate somehow turned to love. We do not know how Shizuo would behave if he weren’t so strong. We don’t know where Kida would be and what he would be like if he had never been a part of the Yellow Scarves. We don’t know these things. But fanfiction makes it fun and gives us opportunities to see a characters in a new way based off of the WRITER’S headcanons and kinks. And I love that. I think it’s so much fun.
For me, there is Durarara!! and then there is Durarara!! fanfiction. I love both, but I am very sure to keep them separate since none of, as fans, know what it is that Narita thinks about each of his characters. Hell! Maybe he knows what Izaya would really be like in a relationship with someone else. Maybe fluff could exist between two enemies. We don’t know.
Fanfiction gives us what we want to satisfy our kinks and fetishes.
If you don’t like it, simply don’t read it. But don’t discredit fanfiction for this series because there are so many talented authors in this fandom who really do love all sides of Durarara!! from the ships to the actual plot.
I get what this confession is saying. And in a lot of ways I agree with it. Writers of any sort do need to be cautious of development in their stories. It isn’t JUST the DRRR!! fandom or fandoms in general. It’s just that you can’t flat out say a person is REFUSING to acknowledge something because of how they write a character in a certain story.
Given the plot is strong enough and the writing is good enough, fanfiction can make me enjoy anything from fluff to guro.
